Yes, that is the question we usually ask our-self.
My friend Brandon Eu made a nice reflection post on this.
Every time there’s a new camera announced by Nikon, I’ve always find myself wanting to buy it.
Now unlike Brandon, I didn’t get my info about gears from magazines. Heck, I don’t even buy magazines anymore since last year. I find them overloaded by advertisement, and you can get similar (or better) information from the internet.
When I find myself lusting for a new D3x and the 70-200 f2.8 VR II, I ask myself if I really need them or are they just to satisfy my vanity.
I own my classic d80 for 3 years. I know pretty much everything about it. I know its limitation, mainly the slow fps and the DX format. I knew I needed to upgrade to break those limitation. I knew I needed the full frame and 8fps and higher low light performance to advance my photography.
Then I research online to find the cheapest full frame. Enter d700. 3 weeks later, I hold the camera of my dream, with all the features I needed (want, rather).
So, before you decide to even look for a new camera, ask yourself if you really really need it, if you really really have used up all the capabilities of your old camera. Then you ask yourself, what kind of camera do you need to advance?
Piece of advice: ‘DO NOT trust all the commercial on magazine or TV’
Remember, camera is more than just a tool. Its more than just a brush to a painter. Its more than just a knife to a chef. Camera is the genius that could only show its true power in the hand of the capable.
