Before the workshop commences, i got several people telling me to cancel the event because the forecast says its gonna rain heavily that day. I checked it myself and i saw that there is a possibility of no rain at night. I am willing to bet on it rather than canceling the workshop because of some probability. In the end, some 10 people turned up for briefing and bean bag manufacturing at Caulfield campus and some 5 people joined us in the city afterwards. Quite a good number considering the skepticism.
We arrived at the Flinders Street station around 7pm and shoot around Federation Square while teaching the new members how to get their camera steady. We started to wander around the bridge and Southbank around 8pm till 10.30pm. Overall, it was awesome. I got all positive comment from the workshop students. Anyway, lets get started with the members photos.
Note that for most of the workshop students, this workshop is the first time they go out at night and take long exposure shots, so I am not expecting them to take awesome shots. But heck, how wrong can I be!? Check out these amazing shots by my beloved MPC members.
Jeffry Poynter
6" f2.8 - somehow i love the the light bulbs along the cables.
6" f7.1 - This shot might be improved if we expose it a little longer to get more detail out of the shadowy area and the buildings on the background.
8" f8.4 - Good sense of scale and distace by including the foreground.
The exif file is damaged, but judging from other similar pics that Jeffrey has taken, its 8" f7.7 - Doesn't need to be black and white to be awesome. Even though i would emphasize on the reflection in the water.

One of the best photo of the night. Interesting bokeh and composition. The focus (or lack of) makes this shot unique.
Nice composition and reflection. Although the bright light on the right is really distracting.
Good stuff! i love the exposure and composition.
Awesome motion blurs although the light on the left corner is causing lens flare.
Low perspective experiment, this is made possible by the flexibility offered by 190xprob to hold the camera steady on extra low angle.
Monique Ly Tieu
Example of under-exposed shot. But again, this could also be used for "EARTH HOUR 2009" front page material. haha.
Properly exposed version of similar shot. Tripod was not used, hence the motion blur.
This is what happens when you use slow sync flash while moving the camera around :p
Ravneesh Garg
Very underexposed shot of the Flinders Street station. Longer shutter speed might save the shot.
Good example of traffic trail picture. Kinda underexposed though. Again, longer shutter speed is appropriate.
Cmon Ravneesh! open the shutter longer! :p Remember, try to exploit your camera to the extreme!
Shirui Li
Jaw dropping shot... she was trying to imitate my Eureka tower shot from last year, and i can say with confidence that she did it! 30 second exposure eh!
Another awesome long exposure shots. Can't say much to this. I'm captivated.
Awesome reflection, Awesome lights, Awesome colors. The exposure alone overpower the composition.

First thing i notice in the picture? The lamp post at the bottom of the shot. Anyway, the reflection in the water is still harsh, meaning the shutter speed isn't long enough to blur it. Good try nevertheless.
Awesome light formation, it becomes an abstract leading lines to the end of the tunnel.
Example of high noise photo, the limitation of compact camera that we can't bypass. moving on to the composition, notice that the big fence is obstructing 1/4 of the image and the tower on the right got cut just like that. need to improve on that
Rita The
Good impression of the church. although the bright building on the left side distracts the eyes alot from the church. Also notice the light trail left behind by moving cars.
You CAN crop your picture to a square if you wanted. Don't get fixated by the rectangle format everybody uses :p anyway, a better example of traffic trails. also notice the starry lamps.
Somehow she can get the starry effect from 4" f8. awesome. but longer exposure might be good to produce image with more impact. This is somewhat underexposed.
Kit Huynh
Kit with her compact camera taking shots like this? unbelieveable!
I love how she made Fed Square looks so empty.
Say what you want, but her compact camera shots is not inferior to SLR's
To be honest, all of the pictures above surpass my expectation. Good work everybody.
See ya at the next workshop.
